About Our Students
Students who join our program do so because they want to be a part of a fun organization, would like extra help in school, are looking for someone to talk to and hang out with, and are able to commit three hours a week to spending time with their mentor.

The story of a 7th grade mentee:

When I started my first day at Willard Middle School, I was very nervous. My heart was beating faster than a cheetah's heart running from a jet plane. I don't think I've ever felt so terrified of school in my life. I saw so many kids who looked like they were in high school, college, and even full-grown adults. This was one of the craziest scariest things I have ever seen and I wanted to go home so bad.

A week after all the sixth graders got to know some teachers and got a tour of many parts of schools. The worst thing happened, HOMEWORK. I was stuggling hard and looking for help. I was so anxious to get some help I started asking other kids at school. The worst part as that my grades were killing me and my parents. I felt so miserable.

I went to go talk to my mathematics/science teacher and I was telling her how anxious I was about getting good grades in all my classes. I needed a lot of help with homework. She started telling me about a place called YSP. I really started to think about it and ask here where it was.
After talking to my teacher I really started thinking about important things in life such as going to college and the direction I wanted my life to head.

After filling out the YSP application, inteviewing with YSP, and a little bit of waiting for my mentor, I finally began getting help from someone who knows where I come from and she knows how hard it is to struggle for too many things at the same time. I have a great mentor, she has helped me boost up my grades where I want them to be, and now that I'm in the seventh grade, thanks to YSP, I have he as a friend.
