Become a Mentor:

- Commit: 3 hours per week for two semesters. Hours are flexible around your and your mentee's schedules, but you must meet the 3 hours/week requirement.
- Get Support: Earn up to two units in our Wednesday night support class, taught at UC Berkeley from 5-6pm. New mentors must enroll.
- Change a Life: Become a role model for success. Learn about the Berkeley community. Work with a middle school student.

Learn more by exploring the Mentoring Page.

Become a Teacher:

- Commit: 4 hours per week for two semesters. Teachers must be available to teach after school Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday 3-4:30pm (2-3:30pm on Wednesdays).
- Get Support: Earn up to two units in our Wednesday night support class, taught at UC Berkeley from 5-6pm. All teachers must enroll.

4. Get a TB Test

Any volunteer with the school district must get a TB (tuberculosis) test and submit the results to YSP before beginning any work with children--this is a statewide policy. Please consider turning in the results of your TB test with your application.

Ways to complete the TB test requirement:
  • Tang Center: Drop-in TB testing at the University Tang Center's Specialty Clinic (first floor). Cost: $20 for students with and without SHIP. For more information visit: http://uhs.berkeley.edu
  • Free Clinic: TB testing at the Berkeley Free Clinic, located on 2339 Durant between Dana and Ellsworth. Cost: free. For a schedule of TB testing and a phone number for appointments, please visit: http://www.berkeleyfreeclinic.org/generalMedical.html
  • Berkeley Public Health Clinic: The City of Berkeley offers TB testing at its Public Health Clinic at 830 University (accessible via bus route 51). The cost is a sliding scale between free and $30. Learn more at: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=11302
  • If you have had a TB test within the past year, you do not need to take another one. Please submit a copy of your results to the YSP office (a record can usually be obtained from your doctor if you do not already have it).

Fingerprinting

Fingerprinting for new mentors will take place at the YSP office once each semester. You will be given more information about this after you apply. After that, fingerprinting will take place at our Richmond office.
